On the great river

most beautiful views on the high banks of the Elbe

The Elbe

from Lauenburg to Geesthacht

The Elbe winds its way for over 1,000 kilometres from Czechia to the North Sea. The Elbe Cycle Route, one of Germany's most popular long-distance cycle routes, runs along the banks of the river. The high banks of the Elbe between Lauenburg and Geesthacht offer very special nature experiences. From the saddle of your bicycle, you can enjoy the view of the water and the fascinating river landscape, while the Elbe barges glide leisurely past on the great river.

The high banks of the Elbe are part of the UNESCO Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve, which spans both sides of the river and covers several federal states. The Askanierblick viewpoint, located directly in front of Lauenburg Castle, offers a magnificent view of the border triangle between Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

 Human - Model - Machine

Under this motto, the Elbe Shipping Museum in Lauenburg's old town takes visitors on a journey through the exciting history of shipping on the great river. The interactive exhibition focuses on the people who designed, built and operated the machines. The museum's basement houses the ‘treasure trove of ship propulsion systems’, and the historic paddle steamer ‘Kaiser Wilhelm’ is moored there and regularly invites visitors to take trips.

 Boating on the Elbe

Those who board an Elbe riverboat can enjoy beautiful views of the ‘Hohe Elbufer’ (High Elbe Bank). The tours start at Menzer-Werft-Platz in Geesthacht and at Ruferplatz in Lauenburg. The programme includes trips to Dömitz, Hitzacker, the Scharnebeck ship lift and the port of Hamburg. The historic paddle steamer ‘Kaiser Wilhelm’ is the longest-serving vessel on this section.
