For all the senses

rustling leaves and forest air

The Sachsenwald

Green lungs on Hamburg's doorstep

Spicy forest air, a shady, rustling canopy of leaves: covering around 70 square kilometres, the Sachsenwald is Schleswig-Holstein's largest contiguous forest area. It can be reached by S-Bahn from Hamburg, making it a popular destination for day trips just outside the Hanseatic city. The forest is traversed by the Bille river and its tributaries.

Spruce, pine, beech and oak trees dominate the landscape. Wonderful hiking trails invite you to take beautiful walks. The Sachsenwald forest has been owned by the von Bismarck family since 1871. The museum, mausoleum and Bismarck Foundation still commemorate the former Reich Chancellor today.
