Works by the artist, who spent his school years in the cathedral city, are on display.

How can art and history become an experience? The new Ernst Barlach Museum Ratzeburg invites visitors on an exciting journey: 150 years of modernization in our world are transformed into an emotional encounter for young and old alike.

Art and culture play a central role on this time journey. Room installations combine sculptures with film projections on the themes “Humans and Nature” and “Humans and the World,” vividly illustrating what the past and present meanings of the future are. On a 5.60-meter touchscreen, visitors can effortlessly explore films, photos, and documents from a period that begins with Ernst Barlach and whose consequences we experience today. Moreover, visitors can playfully discover with others what they know about art and culture, inventions, and developments of this era, which we call Modernity.

An entire floor is dedicated to Barlach’s theatrical world, which few people know. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in large-scale stage designs from the most important German theaters from 1920 onwards and use augmented reality to virtually step into individual stage scenes. A highlight is also a virtual reality 3D installation: with an Oculus Quest headset, visitors find themselves in the midst of a Barlach stage production, either as an observer or a participant.

The experimental Barlach app guides visitors through questions and tasks, creating personal encounters with individual works and leading to individual interpretations and new discoveries. With alertness and creativity, visitors can design their own messages as postcards and send them directly.

In the virtual THINKING SPACE FUTURE, YOUR voice counts: what does our future need today? Here, you can vote, and your input goes directly into our public word cloud!
