Askanierblick
Ascanian view
21481 Lauenburg/Elbe
High above the Elbe, at the southernmost tip of Schleswig-Holstein, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. From the Askanierblick in Lauenburg/Elbe, the eye wanders over the border triangle. The great river dominates the idyllic landscape.
Three waterways meet in the over 800-year-old shipping town: the Elbe, the Elbe-Lübeck Canal and the Elbe Lateral Canal. If you feel drawn down into the historic old town from the Askanierblick, you will find yourself between the narrow alleyways and colorful half-timbered houses of Elbstraße after just a short walk.
The Askanierblick was named after the German noble family of the Ascanians. The Ascanians are among the oldest ruling aristocracy and played a key role in the history of several northern German states. One of the most famous representatives of this dynasty is Tsarina Catherine II of Russia. With the castle and its mighty fortified tower behind you, you can enjoy the view over the Elbe today, just as the Dukes of Lauenburg once did.
