Vortrag A. Paul Weber

A. Paul Weber (1893–1980) is not only a highly significant artist, but also a historically complex and multifaceted شخصیت. Having lived to the age of 87, he experienced several epochs of German history. Throughout his life, his closeness to nature and his love of his homeland remained central to his identity; in his youth he was a member of the Wandervogel movement. In this context, he sought proximity to nationalist-minded circles, which was also reflected in his works.

During the first 30 years of his life, Weber worked almost exclusively as a commercial graphic artist and book illustrator for various publishing houses, including the Matthes Verlag, for which he carried out numerous commissions. This publishing house included a number of authors who adhered to antisemitic ideologies. Even after the publication of his “British Pictures” in the Nibelungen publishing house of the National Socialists, Weber was commissioned there twice more as an illustrator.

In her lecture, Dr. Anke Mührenberg will present selected excerpts from this period and provide insight into the life and work of A. Paul Weber, particularly focusing on the years up to the end of the Second World War.
